Twitter is transforming into X, an all-inclusive "everything app," and introducing new features such as video calling. Linda Yaccarino, X's CEO, announced that users will soon be able to make video chat calls without sharing their phone numbers with other users on the platform. This is Yaccarino's first TV appearance as Twitter CEO after leaving NBCUniversal, where she served as Chairman of Global Advertising & Partnerships.
Although Yaccarino did not provide specific details about the release date or functionality of video calling, it is expected to be similar to the direct messaging system on the platform, resembling Facebook's video calling capabilities. It is unclear if video calls on X will be limited to mutual followers or exclusive to X Premium subscribers. The latter option is possible since X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) provides access to various new features, encouraging users to subscribe and generating revenue for the platform.
Musk and Yaccarino aim to set X apart from traditional Twitter by constantly introducing new features. Video calls are among the features currently under development or in beta testing. Other recent additions to the platform include creator subscriptions, longer post lengths up to 25,000 characters, an Articles tool similar to Substack, and the ability to upload extended videos. The emphasis on video features is evident, as witnessed by Tucker Carlson launching an exclusive show on Twitter after leaving Fox News and Apple premiering the pilot episode of their sci-fi series "Silo" on the platform.
In addition to video capabilities, online financial tools play a significant role in Twitter's transformation into X. The company is pursuing partnerships to create a stock-trading hub within the app, similar to Robinhood. There are also plans to establish X as a digital wallet and online banking service, resembling the functions of WeChat. This transformation would enable users to make payments to content creators or external parties.

Yaccarino stated that Twitter's transformation into X is focused on creating a vibrant and engaging experience with real-time interaction seamlessly integrated into one unified interface.
