We has received insider information regarding Apple's 2024 iPhone models, offering a glimpse into the design of the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max through a set of detailed mockups. These mockups are based on prototype designs from Apple, and while not final, they provide the most accurate representation to date of what we can anticipate from the new iPhones. Let's take a glimpse at the design of the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are poised to build upon the design features of their predecessors, the iPhone 15 Pro series, which introduced curved edges and a titanium frame. The new models are expected to showcase larger displays and introduce a capacitive Capture button.
According to various sources, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro (codenamed "Diablo") and iPhone 16 Pro Max (codenamed "Lightning") will feature display sizes of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively, a notable increase from the previous 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays. This enlargement is likely a strategic move to accommodate the 5x tetraprism Telephoto camera in both Pro models. In contrast, the 5x Telephoto lens was exclusive to the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max in the previous generation. The expanded size will allow both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max to include this advanced camera feature.
Both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will continue to feature a multi-purpose Action button, similar to the one found on the iPhone 15 Pro series. Users can customize this button for various functions. Despite experimenting with different sizes and designs, the current design documentation indicates that the Action button will retain the same size as the previous model.
An earlier design for the Action button, known as "Atlas," was envisioned to be a larger capacitive button with a force sensor. However, the latest design iterations for the iPhone 16 Pro series do not include this larger button, casting doubt on the continuation of the Atlas project and suggesting a preference for a traditional mechanical Action button.
The right side of the iPhone 16 Pro models will feature a new Capture button, as revealed in our December renders of the standard iPhone 16 models. This button, codenamed "Nova," is expected to be capacitive with force-sensor capabilities and is designed for video recording, as confirmed by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. It will be located beneath the power button, prompting a relocation of the mmWave antenna to the left side for U.S. models. The Capture button is designed to be flush with the frame, in contrast to the protruding power and volume buttons.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will continue to utilize Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), with no significant alterations to the finish. Prototype devices have been spotted in a "Silver" color, marketed as "White Titanium," with Apple reportedly planning to introduce an additional color to the lineup, details of which are currently unavailable.
While our mockups accurately depict the current state of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max designs, it is important to note that the devices are still in the early stages of development. Apple may implement further design changes as the process continues.
