Microsoft has announced that the new AI-empowered Bing is now accessible through the Bing mobile app and Microsoft's Edge browser for Android and iOS. This comes just two weeks after its launch on desktop, which had a few hiccups along the way. With this update, users can now use voice input to interact with Bing's chat mode. Furthermore, Bing has integrated with Skype, Microsoft's messaging app, enabling users to add Bing into text conversations for additional information.
It's not surprising that Microsoft is expanding Bing to mobile devices as it incentivizes users to install the mobile Bing app by offering priority access to new features. On the other hand, the integration with Skype was not widely anticipated. Despite having 36 million daily users, Skype often feels overlooked by Microsoft.
Through this new integration (currently in preview), users can add Bing to any chat using the "@Bing" command and ask the same questions as in regular chat mode. One notable feature is the ability to choose whether the answers appear as bullet points, text, or a "simplified response." This is a feature that should also be available in regular Bing chat.
This concept may sound familiar to those who remember Google's messaging app, Allo, which attempted a similar integration with the Google Assistant. However, Allo's capabilities were restricted as it predates large language models like GPT-3. Bing's mobile apps, on the other hand, offer no surprises and the addition of voice search is convenient for users on the go. Microsoft's text-to-speech technology allows users to dictate questions, with Bing reading the answers aloud.
Even though Microsoft has moved away from its Cortana voice assistant, Bing's integration of large language models makes a strong case for voice assistants, which have lacked standout features beyond basic functionalities like setting timers.
In recent times, Microsoft had to limit Bing's functionality due to users pushing the system beyond its tested limits. However, despite these limitations, Bing remains a useful tool in day-to-day interactions. While it is still in early stages, Microsoft has shown a willingness to listen to feedback. Nevertheless, I am disappointed that users are now restricted to only six turns per conversation and a maximum of 60 queries per day.
