In August, a significant event shook the social media world.
In mid-August, "X" shut down its office in Brazil.
By the end of August, "X" was banned from doing business in Brazil due to a censorship dispute.
Additionally, Alexandre de Moraes, a judge of Brazil's Supreme Court, stated that any users attempting to access the former Twitter via VPN would face fines of thousands of dollars per day.
Brazilian posters needed a new place to post. As a result, by the end of August, many Brazilian "X" users had found a new online social media platform, namely "X's" competitor, Bluesky.
So, what impact did this event have on the performance of these two apps in August?
Which other apps showed notable trends in August?
Next, let's explore the notable growth trends of
"X",
"Bluesky",
"ChatGPT", and
"Temu" in August.
X
In August, X was banned from the Brazilian market. Did this impact its app performance?
Brazil is one of the biggest drivers of Android downloads.
According to
Market Segment, as of the end of August 2024, Brazil is the second-largest Android market in the world, accounting for 8.40% of global downloads, second only to India.
Given the ban in such an important Android market, did it affect X's user acquisition and revenue?
According to our
App Intelligence, X did experience a very slight decline in downloads on both the Android and iOS markets in August. However, the decline was minimal, and most apps were experiencing a similar trend during that month.
From this perspective, losing the Brazilian market in August did not significantly impact X's download numbers.
In contrast, its
Estimated Global Revenue not only did not decline but actually increased on both Google Play and the App Store. It even broke the app's historical revenue records on both platforms.
Especially on Google Play, where it showed a significant increase.
In the Brazilian market, X's revenue on both the App Store and Google Play also showed an upward trend. In fact, August's revenue was the highest for any month in 2024.
Based on the current data, it seems that X being banned from the Brazilian market has not impacted its profits.

FoxData, as we will continue to analyze "X" with further data from September.
Bluesky
After X was banned in Brazil at the end of August, many Brazilian X users found a new online social media platform, X's competitor, Bluesky.
Bluesky was developed while Jack Dorsey was at the helm of Twitter.
Did this event impact Bluesky's app trends?
The answer is, "yes!"
This event was a major contributor to the skyrocketing growth of Bluesky's user base.
Bluesky had been performing modestly until August 28. However, starting on August 29 (App Store) and August 30 (Google Play), it began experiencing phenomenal growth.
Relying solely on the phenomenal growth in the last few days of August, Bluesky successfully broke the 2024 user acquisition record with 361,823 downloads on the App Store and 164,748 downloads on Google Play.
In August, Brazil accounted for the largest share of these downloads, with 75.67% on the App Store and 45.15% on Google Play.
This growth has continued into September. As of September 18, the download numbers on both the App Store and Google Play have already surpassed those of August.

In August, the primary new user base was from Brazil, accounting for 16.55% of the total downloads
Brazil is one of the countries with the highest Google Play download volumes.
Temu launched in Brazil in June, initially benefiting from tax exemptions, which were later revoked by the government. Following its June launch, Temu saw continuous user acquisition growth on Google Play over the next two months.
